Like most of us these days, I try to get the most out of any cosmetics. I’ll try to get the last bit of concealer from the tube, or that final swipe of the mascara. These helpful tips for makeup expiration dates are important to know when your makeup is past its prime.
Why you ask? It’s easy to introduce bacteria into the containers if you’re not careful. Unintended contamination from fingers, dropsies, or re-applying over existing makeup is the culprit. Keep the makeup expiration dates in mind to avoid unwanted complications.I would venture to say that your makeup drawer needs a good cleaning anyway.
Foundation: 6 Months – 2 Years.
Keep an eye on the expiration dates and consider it an opportunity to try something new. Formulas change and improve all the time. You don’t want breakouts from old, bacteria-ridden foundation.
Concealer: 1 Year.
You don’t want the concealer to thicken on your face, especially in the delicate eye area.
Mascara: 3-6 Months.
It is difficult enough to keep lashes healthy as we age, so toss your mascara at least every six months. Also, remember not to pump the wand inside the tube, as it dries out mascara quicker and introduces bacteria.
Eyeliner: 6 Monthsโ1 Year.
Pencil eyeliners refresh every time you sharpen them, so they will last up to a year, give or take. You should toss gel and liquid eyeliners after 6-8 months.
Lipstick: 2 Years.
Keep an eye out for changes in color, texture, or smell, as these could be warning signs that your lipstick has expired. Also, remember to keep lipsticks clean by wiping off any residue and occasionally spraying them with a bit of rubbing alcohol.
Blush, Eyeshadow, and Powder Cosmetics: 1-2 Years.
Powder lasts longer than cream or liquid formulas but always check them periodically. Start fresh if there’s any kind of unusual or unpleasant smell.
Nail Polish: 1-2 Years.
Polishes do much better when stored upright in a cool, dry place. If they get clumpy, thinning them with a product formulated will revive them.
Perfume: 8-10 Years.
Keep your scents out of direct sunlight to make the most of your favorite perfume’s shelf life.
It’s one more way to care for yourself. Besides, stopping by the makeup counter for a refresh with a beauty pro isn’t a bad idea now, isn’t it? Let know how you’ve treated yourself!
